"Is Your Tuner Out?", Proverbs 29

"The good-hearted understand what it's like to be poor; the hardhearted haven't the faintest idea."

Proverbs 27:7

"Spiritual Blindness"

There are many fantastic and exhilirating moments we will miss in life by being spiritually blind. The God of the universe who protects wisdom and knowledge and is the giver of life, sees all things. I've always wondered why "faith" pleases him, the faith to believe that he is a good God, even when our own pondering doesn't reveal his plan. Sin deadens our senses, but a sold out dedicated love for Jesus reveals much.

We think we know so much, but the truth is we know so little about God and his plan to use us for his purposes.

Regarding the poor. I have had moments of poverty and moments of plenty. In America, our poor are rich. In reality, it is hard to even categorize many people as poor when compared to the severe poverty suffered in most parts of the world. So, if you think you are poor and struggling, you may actually be rich and not even recognize that fact. Sure people are hurting financially, but many have squandered their wealth or failed to plan for the hard times (I've been there too). We believed the hype about credit and lived beyond our means for too long.

Now, we can be in severe need and faced with few options due to lack of funds. It's in those instances that we are able to lean on the provision of a God who is trying to get our attention. When we have been there, we can relate to others and be prepared to meet a need. If you are rich in spirit, you are never really poor. God provides the richness we seek. We need to open our eyes to see what he is doing in these times and trust him with a plan that makes sense for our lives.

"Perservering to the End"

Proverbs 27:18 - "If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed."

You and I have been blessed to be in business, work for a great company, or lead a wonderful organization. What is God calling you to do with your life? How can he use you to make an impact for the Kingdom where you are? I have seen many Christian businessmen incorporate their faith in their business and workers do the same.

I admire a friend of mine who has one of the most successful business radio shows in our market here in Houston. He is really good about mentioning God in his broadcasts and crediting him for such a prosperous city. He is quick to point to the wisdom of the bible and how business men and women should inlcude him in their business practices. I am especially proud of companies like Chick-fil-A, Kingdom Racing (www.KingdomRacing.net), Sherwood Pictures, PureFlix Cinema, The WEll DONE AWARDS (www.WellDoneAwards.com), GodTube, and others who are coming onto the scene to demonstrate the power of God in business. We onlyhave one chance in this life to get it right. Time to get our tuners tuned.

Seeing the Future, Proverbs 28

"When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it— But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out."

Proverbs 28:2

Can you see the future? A lot of consultants and economists trying to predict the economy nationally and globally. Many seem to be leaning towards more government control. Even Google CEO is telling us to trust the government! Yikes, we are in trouble.

I don't know if Obama is the man or not. I must admit I am one of the 58M who didn't vote for him and still have my doubts. I hope he succeeds in keeping our nation safe and gets our economy humming. I think the answer should come from the private sector, not the corporate conglomerates and bloated governmental institutions, but the mom and pop businesses and those on an accelerated trajectory path who are raising capital and hiring skills and talents in demand. People need to be encouraged to start their own business. We all have the seeds of greatness, but few are offering that route to the populace at large.

If we are going to reward those who pay no taxes and those who aren't creating jobs, I think we are going to be in a tight fix. Of course, I don't want to predict anything.

"Less Talk, More Do!" Tom Peters (one of my favorite leadership consultants)

"People In China Are Starving For Your Job" by Tom Peters

Proverbs 28:12 - "When good people are promoted, everything is great, but when the bad are in charge, watch out!"

Ever had a bad boss? I have. In fact, I started my company in 1999 to be my own boss and I am tougher on myself than any I have ever had. I work longer hours, I push myself to do more, and my clients expect no less. What did I get myself into?

Well, compared to the instances of serving under a politically calculating boss, a thankless task master, or someone that just lacks professionalism, I am in heaven. I know many people who are frustrated, hate their job, and wish they were doing something else. Sadly, many of us rarely get to utilize all of our talents and skills and feel like we are wasting away. Ask God for a vision. Let him plant a seed in your heart and believe him for an opportunity. You do have a bright future, if you are looking for it.

1.27.09 "So, You Want to Be Famous?", Proverbs 27

"Don't brashly announce what you're going to do tomorrow; you don't know the first thing about tomorrow."

Proverbs 27:1

Andy Warhol

Have you gotten your 15 minutes of fame yet? I like being positive about the future, but have learned that you never really know how things are going to turn out. Solomon was a big believer in diversification and of course his wisdom made him very successful and famous. In an era of challenges and changes, there are many questions we may have about the future. Wisdom, it seems, is more critical in these fast-moving times. Maybe we should boast less and work more at making our dreams a reality?

"Beverly Hills" by Wheezer

Proverbs 27:21 - "The purity of silver and gold is tested by putting them in the fire; The purity of human hearts is tested by giving them a little fame."

I have had the opportunity to work with celebrities and been on TV and radio myself many times. I enjoy sharing may expertise in Marketing with others in the hopes that my advice and insights will help someone in business. I've only had one person ask me for an autograph which was kind of cool. I enjoy working with authors, media personalities, actors, musicians, and directors, etc. Most seem to take their fame in stride, others seem to forget their past.

We see the headlines of those that crash and burn. People love to be appreciated; in fact, it is a common need. Do an expriment. Tell someone how much you appreciate them and see their reaction. Now, imagine a roomful of fans and one can see how easy it could be to believe in one's own hype.

If you are on a trajectory to fame, it is important to keep your humility. Appreciate people and they will appreciate your example even more. I enjoy reading stories or seeing famous people who offer acts of service to the community, not those who use their fame to blast our country and tear down others.

Cracked Pot, Proverbs 26

"Smooth talk from an evil heart is like glaze on cracked pottery."

Proverbs 26:23

I don't personally know any evil people. I'm sure we come across evil people every day and we may never be aware. I recently thought of an encounter I had with an executive that was kind of creepy. This guy was from Russia and seemed to be an oil executive of sorts. I was called in to make a presenation with some other executives from other companies (a huge round table). This guy was the lead and he had offices in Houston and New York (I read his card) and seemed to be taking "pot shots" at my discussion.

I answered the man's questions, but it just seemed he was more interested in attacking my experience than looking for a way to work together. My position was that this group called me, I was already busy. I was here to help if they saw a way for me do do so. I had worked on a few projects like theirs and they needed a solution to bring their global membership together and open lines of communication and prove the association's value to its members.

As I readied to leave, he got up close to me and he looked at my lapel pen that was on my suit and he asked me what it was. I told him it was a "United States Marine Corps" lapel pin and that I was a former United States Marine. He looked me in the eye and said "Is that so?" and "I said yes sir!" He said nothing else and just stared at me and I left the room.

I never heard from him, but I did get an e-mail from one of the team members thanking me for my presentation. She seemed apologetic for her senior member. I just brushed it off.

I don't know if the guy was evil or not, but he did give me the creeps.

"Hit Him" by Dr. E.V. Hill, Promise Keepers 1993

Proverbs 26:24-26 - "Your enemy shakes hands and greets you like an old friend, all the while conniving against you. When he speaks warmly to you, don't believe him for a minute; he's just waiting for the chance to rip you off. No matter how cunningly he conceals his malice, eventually his evil will be exposed in public."

Not everyone is your friend. Americans are very friendly, we make friends fast; however, we should be on guard. My first instinct is to trust and be friends with everyone, but I have learned that, that can be a mistake. You can even find someone who seems to be "Godly" and find that they have some growing up to do before you can really engage them properly. Some people you do have to keep at a distance and those few close friends, should be welcomed with open arms and gladness.

1.25.09 Misunderstood, Proverbs 25

"Don't jump to conclusions—there may be a perfectly good explanation for what you just saw."

Proverbs 25:8

Have you ever been misunderstood? If you haven't, you may be doing something wrong. I have developed a saying over the years "Your motives will always be questioned, but do good anyway." It hurts when people think something about you that isn't true. The hardest thing for people to do is change their mind, so in most cases you don't even want to try. Let God be the judge and let him fight your "public relations" battles. You will be the victor soon enough. Then everyone will understand.

"Prepare for Rain" scene in Facing the Giants

Proverbs 25:14 - "Like billowing clouds that bring no rain is the person who talks big but never produces."

Are you a rainmaker or a storm cloud? My family and my clients are counting on me to make it rain. When it comes to producing, the big lesson I have learned is you don't stop until it rains. I have had many clients quit on me before I quit on them, but that doesn't change the situation. The Lord has taught me to move past the setbacks, the disappoinments, and connect with the clients who think the same way. They realize that to do something great doesn't happen over night, we must prepare for rain and that takes work and planning.

Save a Life, Proverbs 24

"Rescue the perishing; don't hesitate to step in and help. If you say, 'Hey, that's none of my business,' will that get you off the hook? Someone is watching you closely, you know—Someone not impressed with weak excuses."

Proverbs 24:11-12

The future looks promising. It has been said that advancements in all forms of technology and knowledge will seem like light years compared to the changes that have happened in the last century. Time and progress flew from 1900 to 2000. Inovations from 2000 to 3000 will be incredible, buckle your seats we are in for a wild ride.

If people are perishing on this journey, we have to do something now. How can you and I really make a difference? What is your calling? You and I have been given talents and abilities that could literally change the world we live in for the better. Before God gives us his blessing, he will search our hearts and determine what benefit we bring to the Kingdom.

"Charity Water"

Proverbs 23:24 - "It's wrong, very wrong, to go along with injustice."

People have varying views of justice, but God's view is what really matters. Many claim there is no God, yet the world they invision would not exist without evil being reigned in by justice. What are some of the injustices you see in the world? Before you call it an injustice check it out with the bible first, then get behind the cause. For example, is there such a thing as a just war? Is the death penalty right? What about abortion? Should drugs be legalized? What about prostitution? Euthenasia or Global Warming? There are many moral issues we have to deal with and sadly, many of us lack wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in these matters (including this author). Our decisions mean life and death to someone. We will be held accountable, so it is wise to discern the heart of God on these matters and act accordingly.

1.23.09 The Shudder, Proverbs 23

"Dear child, if you become wise, I'll be one happy parent. My heart will dance and sing to the tuneful truth you'll speak."

Proverbs 23:15-16

"The Zulu Dolls" (Jamming to Life)

Are you a nervous parent? I am. I mean I love being a dad and I hope I am preparing my children well for the future. You never really know how they will turn out. The training we give them is something we hope they keep (we should pray over our children daily). Sadly, I do know of parents who have lost their children early and it breaks my heart to think about those instances.

We almost lost our oldest due to choking. My wife was changing our new born Kayla on the changing table, Kayla was under a year old then. My wife did not realize that Kayla was chewing on a rice chex and as she laid back, it fell into the back of her throat and blocked her air way. My wife came to my home office screaming for me to help her. I thought it was something minor and it was something I could fix with a few pats on the back. What I tried didn't work.

I had to run down to my neighbor's house who was a trained EMT. He was hardly ever home (he worked two jubs to support his family). As I ran to his house, my daughter Kayla went limp on me several times and was turning blue. As I tried to help her, all I could do was say "Jesus help me." Fortunately, my neighbor was home and the door to his home was wide open. I rushed into his house without knocking and he knew exactly what to do and saved her life. I shudder thinking about it now, but God intervened on our behalf. Now, you know why I am still a nervous parent. God is good.

"Angel's Singing" by Kayla Valadez (a song she wrote)

Proverbs 23:22-25 - "Listen with respect to the father who raised you, and when your mother grows old, don't neglect her. Buy truth—don't sell it for love or money; buy wisdom, buy education, buy insight. Parents rejoice when their children turn out well; wise children become proud parents. So make your father happy! Make your mother proud!"

Are you a good parent? I bet you are. Our children are a blessing and if they turn out good, we have a lot of celebrating to do. God bless you and your family!

1.22.09 The Duck, Proverbs 22

"A prudent person sees trouble coming and ducks; a simpleton walks in blindly and is clobbered."

Proverbs 22:3

Much was made of the "show throwing" at President Bush at a recent press conference in Baghdad. The President's quick reaction avoided further embarassment. Many who have hated Mr. Bush for his stances cheered the assailant; however, the simpleton who initiated the attack went on to say he wish he hadn't.

"Pimp Gets Clobbered"

Proverbs 22:24-25 "Don't hang out with angry people; don't keep company with hotheads. Bad temper is contagious—don't get infected."

Should Christians be prepared to defend themselves or their loved ones? The answer is yes. You'd be surprised by how many say "No!" I feel sorry for their family members. You definately don't want to start a fight and you don't want to hang around angry people. You must however be prepared to defend yourself (possibly others) from attackers and evildoers. That is a principle that is part of a Godly heritage.

1.21.09 The Plan, Proverbs 21

"Careful planning puts you ahead in the long run; hurry and scurry puts you further behind."

Proverbs 21:5

"The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin

Are you a planner? I wish I were a better planner. I have been more of a "visionary." In essence, I have a clear scene in my mind that I know can happen and I move towards that picture. Fortunately, the steps have been directed by God (although I am not always obedient).

I haven't achieved everything that I have put to my mind, but I have seen many accomplishments in my life; because of my trust in the Lord. I never believed I would be alive this long (I am 43 now). As a youth, I was a free spirit and wandered where my soul led. God intervened in my life at age 17 and changed me (althought I am still a work in progress).

I don't really plan my days well, I really rely on where God wants to go for the day. I am very methodic and diligent in what I do, but it seems like God is the driver and he allows me to play a role in some really cool things. I enjoy my work and the Lord lets me meet people who are better planners than I and offer them a piece to the puzzle they have been seeking that allows them to accelerate their plans.

A lot of my plans are bigger than even I think is possible, but God shows me that with him all things are possible. I am a dreamer and a doer. I place no limits on what God can do and will do in my life. Do you limit God?

"Facing the Giants" song by Casting Crowns

Proverbs 21:31 - "Do your best, prepare for the worst—then trust God to bring victory."

Wise words. We never know what will work out in our plans. We just know that we are to do. Have you had a victory in your life lately? Are you seeking a victory? Imagine what that day will look like for you and your family and ask God to bring the victory. Hunger for his presence in your life and your days will be victorious. Do your best.

A Bargain, Proverbs 20

"The shopper says, 'That's junk—I'll take it off your hands,' then goes off boasting of the bargain."

Proverbs 20:14

My mother is a shrewd negotiator. She loves to shop at boutiques and will only pay what she thinks something is worth, which is usually way below what the seller thinks it is worth. Somehow, she winds up getting her way.

This verse is a great reminder. If someone is talking really bad about something you are selling them, then they may really value it. Maybe it is wise to stick to your guns and sell it for what you think it is worth or more.

"Spiritually Immature People Seek Revenge"

Proverbs 20:22 - "Don't ever say, 'I'll get you for that!' Wait for God; he'll settle the score."

Are you a revenge seeker? I've never said this to anyone that I can recall, but I must admit that I may have wished that God would zap a few people. Thankfully, he hasn't listened to me in my flashes of anger against another. We must look to the future and understand that God is working in each of our lives. So, if someone harms you, it may be tough, but we must forgive. Sure there are times when justice must prevail and your legal rights may need to be enforced. Seek counsel in those instances, but most things that happen to us don't require action, only forgiveness.

1.19.09 Lift the Fork, Proverbs 19

"Some people dig a fork into the pie but are too lazy to raise it to their mouth."

Proverbs 19:24

Ever heard the old saying "I'll take a stab at it" or "I'll try"? This is the same thing as the verse above. These are people who put forth just enough effort, but don't complete the task at hand. I have been guilty of this myself, but am working harder and harder at completing the job. When I hear someone tell me they are going to "try," I know they aren't.

I have a hard time with people who rarely return calls or reply to e-mails that concern them. So many people cost themselves opportunities. It is rampant!

I was challenged by a business owner I respect who asked me to be sure and remind people to capitalize on their opportunities fully. So, I have written and talked about this subject in the media. "Lifting the fork" could be as simple as calling a few people back. Speaking of, I have some phone calls to make and a few e-mails to reply to.

"Rudeness"

Proverbs 19:29 - "The irreverent have to learn reverence the hard way; only a slap in the face brings fools to attention."

Know any rude people? I've been rude on occasions and I have to repent in those instances. We sometimes call it having a "sense of humor." Sure we should be willing to laugh at ourselves, but laughing at others won't get us very far.

My wife and stopped into a wine business in Fredricksburg, TX and the lady behind the bar was really short and rude with people. She seemed very unhappy to be serving her customers and it looked like she was the owner. She poured quickly and avoided small talk with her clients. We actually saw her get very argumentative with a couple. The lady wine taster, was so upset by the barkeep's demeanor that she walked out. The snobbish bar tender kept herself entertained with the flury of people who popped in, but we could sense that she probably won't have her business for very long. Word of mouth travels fast.

1.18.09 Crushed, Proverbs 18

"A healthy spirit conquers adversity, but what can you do when the spirit is crushed?"

Proverbs 18:14

Have you ever been crushed? I have, many times. In those moments, I have found God there to carry me through.

I remember losing an opportunity in the United States Marine Corps. I had been selected for an Officer program that I had worked hard to get. I had my heart on training to fly the attack helicopter, The AH-1W Super Cobra.

I remember when I first heard the sound of the Cobra on Camp Pendelton in 1988 (it was loud) and I was impressed with all of the battle gear and technology that came with it. This was my dream and my wife and I were looking forward to the "Officer and Gentleman" moments that would materialize in our lives (after 3 years of hard work to get accepted into this program). Sadly, I was notified that 6 of us had been cut from the prestigious opportunity, before we even had a chance to become officers. I was crushed and I was even more saddened to have to tell my wife the bad news. In all honesty, I thought she would leave me. Have you ever been so crushed, that you thought your life was basically over? God has a plan.

Shortly after getting the bad news, we went to war and have been at war ever since. So, I look at my life now and I wonder if things worked out for the best afterall. I have a great family and wonderful opportunities to do more for the Kingdom on the front lines.

"Hope Lifts"

Proverbs 18:15 - "Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights."

Do you love to learn? I love to read books, watch movies (from a Market research point of view), and keep up to date on what is happening in our world in all forms of media (i.e., print, radio, TV, social media, etc.). I especially enjoy working with children who have a zest for life. Fortunately, most of us never lose our child-like qualities.

A friend of mine who has a client that has built a chain of successful restaurants. He claims that he, got many of his ideas from his children. As a result, many people now have nice places to take their family. Ideas are very valuable to me. I have found that an idea is worth $10 or $10M, depending on the eye and the mind of the beholder.

1.17.09 Past Due, Proverbs 17

"It's stupid to try to get something for nothing, or run up huge bills you can never pay."

Proverbs 17:18

Are you laden with debt? I hope not. My wife and I put each other through college and had to carry a certain amount of debt for a while. Fortunately, we are out of debt and feel very fortunate to be able to breath a little better knowing that we have no car payments or credit card bills that we have to face every month. There was a time, when we "charged" or were living beyond our means. With kids around, we still feel the financial pressures, but God has provided. Need to get out of debt? Seek advice and counsel and then stick to your plan.

"Eliminating Debt"

Proverbs 17:27 - "The one who knows much says little; an understanding person remains calm."

In sales, there is a time when the salesman must shut up. This moment comes right at the time when the prospect is ready to buy. Say something at this moment and the sale can go right out the window. It isn't natural to have silence. Our inclination is to talk in those instances. Try saying fewer words in your next interaction. I think we learn more by listening, but our inclination may be to talk. I am guilty of this too often, but I am learning.

1.16.09 Mensch, Proverbs 16

"A wise person gets known for insight; gracious words add to one's reputation."

Proverbs 16:21

I enjoy being able to offer Marketing advice that is helpful to my clients, friends, and family. God has given me a gift to understand the times through my studies of media in all forms. The pyschology of the age is something I have been able to glean from from my constant review of the news, reading of books, watching movies, reviewing websites, radio talk shows, social media, etc. The right idea or recommendation at the right time can make all of the difference in the world.

Having a network of clients who can depend on my recommendations has earned me favor. In essence, by focusing on serving and being a giver, I have found that more doors are opening faster than I can keep up. I especially value those friends who can give wonderful advice to me. I keep those friends close.

"6/7 Factor"

Proverbs 16:26 - "Appetite is an incentive to work; hunger makes you work all the harder."

I still remember the best hamburgers I have ever tasted. My sister and I would mow yards together in the mid 70's. After completing our job, we would ride our bikes to the local Dairy Queen, where we ordered large Root Beers, Hunger Busters with Cheese, and fries and onion rings. She and I would always find a way to make money so we could go do the things we enjoyed. We would often hang out at the mall playing arcades, go to the movies, have a large cheesy pizza, or an occasional rock concert to include the t-shirt that we wore to school. Those were the good old days. What are you hungry for? Has work gotten humdrum? Dream bigger!

1.15.09 The Flourishing, Proverbs 15

"The lives of God-loyal people flourish; a misspent life is soon bankrupt."

Proverbs 15:6

"Flourish" fractal art by Vicky Brago-Mitchell

How are you investing your life? Where is your loyalty? To men or to God? Saw a great movie starring Steven Baldwin called "Cutaway." This movie challenges the psyche of a prominent skydiving team and their quest to go faster and to cutaway anything that keeps them from following their dream. As Christians, we should be prepared to cutaway that which keeps us from flourishing in his grace. In our loyalty to Christ, we are able to enter into the realm of the seemingly impossible.

"Glorious God"

Proverbs 15:33 - Fear-of-God is a school in skilled living—first you learn humility, then you experience glory.

We serve a glorious God who excells at building and molding glorious lives. Has God touched your life in so many areas, that you truly feel alive and blessed? Are you happy to be living out what he has called you to do? If not, what is holding you back? What do you see God doing for you and your family? What do you dare ask of him? "God use me" is the most dangerous prayer. Are you ready to cutaway?

1.14.09 Fan the Flame, Proverbs 14

"The mark of a good leader is loyal followers; leadership is nothing without a following."

Proverbs 14:28

Are you leading and are you following the right people? I am constantly in the search for new mentors and value what leaders are doing to impact our culture for the Kingdom and in business.
One of my daily mantras that I put in my Outlook daily reminder is "I lead by example." Some days my example is not the best, but others are moments to celebrate. Do you have a following? Everyone has a following, but why are they following is the test. Are they following because they have too? How do you inspire people to follow you? There are several areas to demonstrate leadership. One can be a leader in the community (on-line and offline), at home, in business, in close friendships, in the neighborhood, and with family.

"Joseph" Modern Day Version (BlueFishTV)

Proverbs 14:10 - "The person who shuns the bitter moments of friends will be an outsider at their celebrations."

Is there a friend who needs a word of encouragement? Most people stay away when times are tough. Reach out to someone today, just to let them know you were thinking about them. We all go through tough times and you never really know who is facing a real challenge. Your words have a way of blessing people and you may never even knoew it!

The Rich Life, Proverbs 13

"The rich can be sued for everything they have, but the poor are free of such threats."

Proverbs 13:8

In a litigous society, rich people had better be worried. It costs nothing to tie up one's resources and put the rich person on the defensive. The "drain chain" can be a catastrophe in the making. It has been said that "Rich people rarely sue each other." Why would they? Nobody wins.

I guess this is great advice for the wealthy. The richer you get, be sure to get a great great team of lawyers, you may need them.

"Rudy!"

Proverbs 13:12 - "Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick, but a sudden good break can turn life around."

Are you on the cusp of a lucky break? You just know in your heart, things are going to work out. Don't quit. Hang on, pray and walk through to victory. I am really excited by what God is doing in my life right now. Good friends haves said things to me that have been a blessing and they don't even know it. It is like God gave them a message for me that I needed to hear. I feel that a "sudden break" is pending, even thought it has taken years! How are things going with you? Is your break just around the corner?

Collapse and Ruin, Proverbs 12

"What the wicked construct finally falls into ruin, while the roots of the righteous give life, and more life."

Proverbs 12:12

It has been said that success is built on failure. The object is to fail faster and faster until one becomes a success in business, science, and/or in life! This verse offers encouragement for those with a champion's spirit. It recognizes that you will fail and it will seem that you are without remedy, but ultimately the Lord will help you to offer life giving fervor to those around you. It says the "wicked" will ultimately fail, not the righteous.

"Measured Success"

Proverbs 12:15 - "Fools are headstrong and do what they like; wise people take advice."

Are you head strong? I may be. Marines are taught to take charge, move forward, and take the hill (I am a former Marine). Americans are self-reliant. It seems that most people don't want to hear advice or take it. I think this verse cautions us to check our motives. Are we being head strong, when we should stop and heed valuable advice. When we don't listen to our trusted advisors, we may cost ourselves and others valuable opportunities.

1.11.09 Commerce, Proverbs 11 (The Message Translation)

"God hates cheating in the marketplace; he loves it when business is aboveboard."

Proverbs 11:1

"I've got my mind on my money and my money on my mind" - Snoop Dog

My pastor says there are more that 2,000 verses in the bible that talk about money. It is a hot topic. We are emotionally tied to our money. If you don't believe me, try thinking of a life without it. I have worked with the homeless and they have been stripped of everything, their home, their pride, their self-confidence, and their money.. A recovering homeless person is an amazing person. It is great to see their lives restored and a faith that is sold out for God and his glory.

Money is a tool and we are constantly thinking of ways to make it and keep it. The bible is very educational about how to handle money, how to give, and sound business practices for those who are more interested in having a wholesome life over one that is focused on material possessions. Are there rich Christians? You bet. God blesses his people for his purposes.

He clearly wants Christian business and all business people to be above board.

"Shindler's List" ("I could of done more.")

Proverbs 11:26 - "Curses on those who drive a hard bargain! Blessings on all who play fair and square!"

Are you a generous person or are you tight? I avoid "stingy" people and would rather work with a generous person and try to be generous myself. For example, my yardman has been cutting my yard for over 10 years. When he gave me a quote, he told me he would edge, cut, and bag my grass for $25 (I have a really big yard, over 8,000 sqft).

Well, I added up the cost for me to do it in time, maintenaince, fuel, rest I needed, and the loss of income I would not have by not being available to do what I do best. His price was a bargain. I told him I appreciated his offer, but I would like to pay him $40. He was very happy to accept my offer and I was very happy to give it.

I have overpaid him by about $5,000 over the years (just added it up). I have been happy with his service and have seen him pick up 5 of my neighbors yards. He has also served them reliably over the years. I have met his family enjoy when he comes over to cut our yard (fresh and new). I love doing yard work my way, I just write a check and it is done. It feels great to be a blessing to others. Is it time to give your yard man a raise?

1.10.09 Eye to Eye, Proverbs 10 (The Message)

"An evasive eye is a sign of trouble ahead, but an open, face-to-face meeting results in peace."

Proverbs 10:10

People rarely see "eye to eye" on important matters. Our biases, distractions, agendas, fears, emotions, ego, and lack of wisdom gets in the way. We may trust others quickly, not trust others at all, and may be so focused on ourselves that we miss a friendship that could last a life-time.

I've adopted a new saying to help my clients understand what I am looking for in new business relationships. I tell them I am looking for "Needles in a needle stack." In particular, I am looking for silver, gold, or platinum needles." I want battle tested, long-term thinkers, and people willing to shed their agendas to accomplish something great. Now that I know what to look for, it is easier to determine when I come across those people.

"I will I trust" by Colorz of Heaven

Proverbs 10:16 "The wage of a good person is exuberant life; an evil person ends up with nothing but sin."

When we leave this earth, how will people remember us? Were we exuberant? Were worth remembering or misunderstood? My pastor says we should first seek to understand and then to be understood.

An exuberant life sounds wonderful. Do you know exuberant people? The people that seem to always be full of life and excited about the people they know and love. It is contagious to be around exuberant and enthusiastic lovers of life. Are you dull and boring or someone who inspires and encourages? I know soft-spoken people who exude and resonate life in their voice. Exuberance doesn't have to be outlandish it can be in measured speech, but laughter and a smile go a long way. Want to see exuberance in action? Take a look at children at play with other children.

1.9.09 Arrogant Scoffer, Proverbs 9

"If you reason with an arrogant cynic, you'll get slapped in the face; confront bad behavior and get a kick in the shins."

Proverbs 9:7

Have you been around cynics or scoffers? I found a quote on-line that read somethig like this, "Arrogance is a medicine that dulls the pain of one's ignorance." It is usually called an ego or super ego.

I really don't know that many people that are what I would consider arrogant, but recently ran into a guy who made a judgment about me that he couldn't shake. I tried to explain my oversight, but it only came after several e-mails back and forth (the guy did not want to talk on the phone). So after a few kicks in the shins, that matter was resolved and I have learned my lesson and will make sure I know who I am dealing with before I present an opportunity or an idea.

It is hard not to be selfish. Our psychological muscles are trained to preserve our own interests over others. Our egos drive the day. How do we train ourselves to focus on others; especially, when all they care about is themselves? Jesus did an incredible thing for us. He gave of himself to the point that it cost him his own life. The most dangerous prayer according to Rick Warren, Pastor of Saddleback Church and author of "The Purpose Driven" life is "God use me!"

When God uses you, you will find mockers, arrogant people, and fools that you must contend with, but it doesn't make you better than them. Do good anyway!

"Give Your Life Away"

Proverbs 9:8 - "So don't waste your time on a scoffer; all you'll get for your pains is abuse."

My tendency is to want to confront scoffers. I just want to tell them "You don't know me and you don't know my relationship with God!" Whenever I detect a cynic, I avoid them like the plague. Scoffers can come from family members, friends, business associates, neighbors, etc.

Find a core group of people you know and trust and nurture those relationships. A real friend is someone you can call 24/7 and they will take your call and want to know how they can help. Better, be that friend to others. Your close friends will help you to deal with the "flakes" and the "naysayers" that come along. Remember, they don't know you and they don't know your relationship with God.

1.8.09 At Wisdom's Door, Proverbs 8

"Does not wisdom call out?"

Proverbs 8:1

"Wise Solomon" painting by Lars Justinen

The more I read Proverbs, the more I realize what a fool I have been most of my life. It is a shocking look in the mirror, but the image is getting better with each dedicated day of focus (or at least I think I am making the wise choice to to invest time on this travel). I love this photo of Solomon. It just radiates the fullness of Solomon's journey with Wisdom, a blessed life, a continual learning, and hearing from God.

As I was reading Proverbs 8, I felt close to discovering something very powerful that I could apply to my life. I wanted to follow Wisdom at the door and was curious and hungry to know what God wanted me to do, to learn, to experience, to trust him for today.

The "Message" translation of Proverbs 8 is very vibrant, proving that wisdom is the giver of life. An abundant life, offering substantial honor, wholesome talk, and great counsel. Our lives are so orchestrated to give us maximum opportunity to make an impact in the world. What are you most excited about today? What is God doing in your life that you can brag about? Boast on the Lord today!

"The Solomon Portfolio" with Pat Roberts and Robert Katz, CPA

Proverbs 8:18 - "With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity."

One t rillion dollars is about to hit our economy. Yikes! That is a lot of enchiladas. What is your outlook on the economy? What financial wisdom do you need today and coming weeks, months, years, and decades?

Lady Danger, Proverbs 7

"Say to wisdom, 'You are my sister,' and call understanding your kinsman; they will keep you from the wayward wife with her seductive words."

Proverbs 7:5

There must have been many wayward wives back in the day of Solomon. Just like today. Where there are wayward wives, there are wayward men. Solomon makes a point to repeatedly warn against adultery and staying away from that danger.

I was watching TBN the other day and Pat Robertson was answering guestions from the viewers. One young man asked if it was a sin to have an affair with another girl even though he wasn't married, but had a girlfriend. Pat just shook his head and said "Young man, you have many problems. Sex outside of marriage is sin."

That is a hard pill to swallow in this day and age. His lady co-host chimed in and said that the guy just showed how "unscrupulous" he was. Meaning that his integrity was tied to his sexual behavior.

If God calls sex outside of marriage a "sin" I really can't argue. I am thankful to be in a committed marriage and not having to deal with the "dating" issues of the day.

"75 Year Wedding Anniversary" Wedding Vows

Proverbs 7:25 - "Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths."

We are a soceity who believes in the "greater good". Many liberal ideologies are based on this premise, but many of the liberally minded fail to acknowledge biblical principles that truly set the "greater good". Even logic doesn't allow them to fathom the error of their decrees and beliefs. That is called a "spiritual blindness" among believers.

The notion that "abstinence" and "fidelity" strike many as "backward thinking" (not "progressive"); however, the "good" that is promoted actually causes much harm (i.e., hurtful relationships, diseases, jealousy, lower moral standards, deviancy, shallowness, etc.). I think Solomon warns us, that our "moral compass" is swayed and pulled away from the voice of God when we open up our heart to the "waywardness" of our nature.

In the Day of Disaster, Proverbs 6

" Go to the ant . . . yet it stores its provisions in the summer and gathers its food at harvest . . "

Proverbs 6:6-8

Meals Ready to Eat

Do you have a disaster readiness plan for you and your family? It seems that a disaster is always just around the corner. Fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, snow storms, threats of terrorism, power outages, etc. I think it is wise to have a plan for back-up. There are various websites that will help you do this to include FEMA.

Our family has a disaster plan. We learned our lesson during Katrina and had a plan for Ike which includes MRE's, water supplies, communcation sources (i.e., portable radio, TV, and Twitter.com), bedding, first aid, back-up fuel plans, and home and personal protection.

I still need to put some things together like in this video below.

"Emergency Preparedness" - Bug Out Bag (BOB) - TacticalPodcast.com

Proverbs 6:15 - "Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed - without remedy."

You may run into scoffers if you plan for disaster. Fellow believers may view you as not "trusting" God. They forget verses in in the bible that tell us it is wise to plan for disaster. The food we have reserved for disaster is not our everyday food. We don't concern ourselves with what we will eat today, nor in times of disaster. Take care of your families, we do live in dangerous times and in times of chaos, water, food, and fuel are in short supply. Better to have a plan.

Cheaters, Proverbs 5

"I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly."

Proverbs 5:14

Joey Greco host of "Cheaters"

I must admit that I occasionally watch this TV show (so I am not alone, I have provided a link for you too). It is heart-breaking for the one being cheated on. I remember being cheated on in the 7th grade, by my beautiful girlfriend. I was the last to know. I was crushed and had a hard time trusting girls from then on (until I met my wife).

"Cheaters" is unique in that it catches the "cheaters" in the act. Many times the deed is caught on camera where even the best of liars have no way out. It is hard for a culprit(s) to deny his or her own naked butt on the viewer screen.

Now, to have one's infedility broadcast on national TV is ultimate justice. The cheaters never think they will ever get caught, but they do.

Why is fidelity so important to God? This is a question worth pondering. We see the damage infidelity leaves on families and relationships. The hurt, the despair, and moral failure that is hard to recover from. Before you cheat, imagine the world finding out and think about God who observes everything, even when "Cheaters" is not around.

"Cheaters" Episode

Proverbs 5:21 - "For a man's ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths."

I don't know what judgment day will be like for the unforgiven, but I can imagine it will be uncomfortable. We just aren't smart enough or have the moral righteousness to deal with the crud of our own lives and the ramifications of our decisions on ourselves and others. Like one giant lawsuit one's whole life.

I have always been curious about the era of sacrifice for sins. Heard on TV today that Solomon sacrificed over 22,000 bulls at the opening of the Tabernacle he built for God. Now, to think that God sacrificed his own son for us, is incredible. If we accept Christ, then we are called to be faithful, dedicated, focused, honorable, and holy. That is a tall order. If we cheat, the stakes are high and there is always a cost. I hope you never see me on "Cheaters" and worse, I hope I never see you.

Earn This, Proverbs 4

"Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you."

Proverbs 4:6

Life is a waging war. In John Eldredge's book "Epic", he reveals that humanity is at war with evil and we have entered the scene of a fallen world in the midst of the chaos and danger. We have been protected and isolated from the ravages of destruction; although, it is never really far away (just watch the news on any given day).

We have been blessed with plenty and the protection of the hand of God. I pray over my children daily that they would be spared a life without freedom and safety. I pray that they will make good decisions and always be under the protection of the almighty. If there is a waging war in our midst, are we equipped to fight it? Will we earn what others have already sacrificed?

"Saving Private Ryan" Normandy Cemetery Scene

Proverbs 4:14 - "Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men."

Have you ever walked in the path of the wicked? I know my sins have been forgiven, but I do get flashes from the past that remind me, just how easy it is to sin. I wish I could take all of the pain away and do the right thing, but time has passed and the only thing I can do is work to avoid similar situations in the future. We are so innocent in our own eyes, we are oblivious at times to the hurt we cause in others. Our natural propensity is to see ourselves in a good light.

According to Solomon, even a righteous man sins against God and he warns about being too righteous and risk destroying one's self (Ecclesiastes 7:16).

"The man who fears God will avoid all extremes."

Ecclesiastes 7:18

Life is a balance.

Built to Live, Proverbs 3

"My son do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years . . ."

Proverbs 3:1

"Isolated DNA"

Advances in science and molecular biology have lead to longer life. Eating, breathing, working, and procreating is not really living (there is lot's more to life for sure). Our hearts and minds were created to thrive in a realm that celebrates the author of the universe. The more we know, the less we realize that we know about our creator. Wisdom offers us a chance to glean the ways of a just God, one who delights in a challenge. A God who values honor and integrity and those who seek out knowledge and wisdom and his ways. Our journey never stops, there are more realms to discover.

"Intelligent Design" The DNA Dilemma

Proverbs 3:16 - "Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor."

Want to live longer? Who doesn't? Many baby boomers now in their 60's are worried about their health and the number of their days. We are never promised any more days than what we have been allowed, but God clearly says that he is prepared to extend our days. Why would he do this? I still don't understand why he cuts some lives short and gives more days to others. That will remain a mystery.

A summation of life by Solomon:

"Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep his commands, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing whether good or evil."

The Edge of Eternity, Proverbs 2

"He holds victory in store for the upright . . ."

Proverbs 2:7

"Edge of Eternity" by Dave Makin (using mathematical fractals software)

Do you live on the edge? This term is usually reserved for visionaries and juggernauts. I remember a "hot shot" sales representative tell some of his associates, in an effort to motivate them, that "If you aren't living on the edge, you are taking up too much room."

A Christian "on fire" for God realizes that he is living on the edge of eternity, pushing and expanding territory for the kingdom. Interestingly, this focus applies in business, in ministry, at home, and in the community. If you don't feel under attack in your efforts, then something may be wrong. When we attempt to do the miraculous, we find ourselves depending more and more on God's direction and when we are showing signs of success, the enemy must try to contain the advancements. According to the prayer of Jabez, we need protection from the enemy. We don't want to fight the battle ourselves, we want to create skirmishes and walk in the protection of the almighty.

"The Prayer of Jabez" I Chronicles 4:10

Proverbs 2:20 - "Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous."

We want to seek God's protection and walk in his blessing. I love the quote from General Patton "Your job is not to die for your country, but to make the other dumb bastard die for his." We want to avoid evil, to avoid harm, but we want to advance in the battle realizing that God is with us and leading the way. Is he expanding your territory? With more territory comes more responsibility.

The Journey Continues

I apologize for dropping off the scene. My family and I have been on vacation and without an internet connection. I brought along plenty of reading material, but have spent a fair amount of my time slumbering. I guess the work schedule has caught up with. Been a great time of rest, travel, and family time.

We stayed at a vacation rental in Wimberley, TX where we saw plenty of wild game to include 30 wild turkey one early morning. We have visited Fredricksburg, Johnson City, San Marcos, and now College Station.

I've been reading "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" by Steven Kay Scott who documents his own Proverbs Journey. Also found a copy of "The Prayer of Jabez" at a dollar store in San Marcos. Hope you have a great New Year!

I should resume bloggging 1.2.09.
