12.24.08 A Fat Soul, Proverbs 24

"If you falter in times of trouble; how small is your strength."

Proverbs 24:10

My wife gave me a book for Christmas "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" by Steven Kay Scott, the man who inspired my own 2-year journey through Proverbs. I am thoroughly enjoying reading it. He has offered many new insights into how one reads and interprets the writings of Solomon.

Solomon talked of having a "fat soul", a soul that is mature, capable, and has strength. It is the true measure of a man or woman. Finally, Solomon ran many empires and kingdoms and employed over 12,000 horesemen and had dug over 1,000 mines. In today's terms according to Mr. Scott, Solomon would be a trillionaire! So, many of Solomon's verses have to do with the work and effort of digging those mines, growing a kingdom, seeking counsel, work, and the purification process of precious metal to demonstrate one's life achievements.

Finally, many of the Proverbs are dual in meaning. When read on face value, the verse conveys a powerful meaning and when read conversely reveal an additional truth. Here's to soul fattening, it adds no calories to the body!! God bless.

"Solomon's Mines Discovered"

Proverbs 24:33-34 - "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest - and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man."

Our natural tendency is the path of least resistance. Solomon warns against this. One can work hard and one can work smart. Diligence is the active daily, thoughtful approach to one's business and life. You can take a hammer to a tree and take forever to hack it down or you can use a chainsaw and have it cut down in minutes. We are to be on the move, getting things done, and having our work be like fine gold and silver.

Wore Out, Proverbs 23

"Do not wear yourself out to get rich, have the wisdom to show restraint."

Proverbs 23:4

The new American dream is to own one's business. There are many reasons why someone would want to own a business - independence, financial security, fulfill a spiritual calling, advance the kingdom, a passion of creating something truly remarkable, new positive relationships, and recognition for one's accomplishment. Business startups are at an all time high in America.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with desiring to be rich (unless that goal has become a God), although it is often talked down upon in religious circles. I've never seen a church send back a big check from a tither because he made too much money. In fact, if we took a poll I believe the numbers would skew very high for making more money, if asked "Would you like to make more money?" many would answer "yes!"

The bible says that God is the giver of wealth for his purposes. Yes there are evil people with money as there are good people with money. If our goal is to be rich (and not everyone really wants to work to be rich) then we must use restraint. Why wear yourself out? If God is calling you to be wealthy, then pursue his direction, advice, and counsel - pray for guidance. If your desire is to be rich at all costs, then it may very well cost you all you hold dear, then what have you gained?

"Are you stressed out?"

Proverbs 23:23- "Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding."

What are you willing to pay for wisdom, discipline and understanding? I get calls from new clients who are interested in having me advise them on their business. After a brief chat, I first advise them to do their due diligence on my company to see if they think they I can help them.

That advice may seen like a barrier to some. I think it is a wise investment on their part that should help them to glean my work and determine if my company has the capability to serve them or help them achieve their goals. If they won't do that, then it really tells me a lot about the client and it frees up my time to work on projects that are of interest to me. After the potential client reviews my capabilities and they believe I can help them, then we meet. That meeting comes with a price tag. The price of the meeting tells me whether the client is serious about their business and if they value my hard work invested in learning the things I have learned about in Marketing.

As I have written in the past, wisdom and understanding comes with a cost. Are you making investments in it or are you too busy (mis-priortized time is a cost)?

Train a Child, Proverbs 22

"Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it."

Proverbs 22:6

My daughter Kayla, Green Belt Karate

Children teach us so much about ourselves. We want our children to have a better life than we did and to avoid our mistakes. My daughter Kayla and I trained for two years in karate and I was impressed at how quickly she learned and how good she was. She has a fierceness and aggressiveness in her that is downright scary. As a parent, it was comforting to know that she now has this training in her subconscious and the self confidence she has as a result of her training.

Children are like sponges. They love to learn something new and explore on their own. We should be available to train them in the path of life. Thise requires more active involvement and guidance.

"Like a Child"

Proverbs 22:15 - "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him."

Spanking children is controversial, but the bible teaches that this is required when raising kids. My children know their are three possible outcomes to their decision to be disciplined. They know the consequences in advance and when they choose to be disciplined, I usually ask them why they made that decision. Their answer normally is "I don't know."

Three outcomes are possible at the corporal punishment stage. They have the opportunity to bring in new information. Maybe I misunderstood the situation and circumstances. Absent of new information, they will receive their "licks" or I may offer them grace.

I believe my children have learned more from grace. With grace they know that they deserve to receive a spanking, but because I love them I set that aside and we pray. We pray that they learned their lesson and they realize that God loves us and he often sets aside our punishment (but we never know what outcome he will choose).

Finally, there are times when grace is not offered and they pay the consequences for their actions. Those are sad and tearful times, but in the end our children realize that we love them deeply and want the very best for them. Fortunately, those times are rare in our household.

The Desert, Proverbs 21

"Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife."

Proverbs 21:19

This is a dangerous verse for a married man. My wife and I have been married for 28 years and we do quarrel from time to time. There are moments when she may be extra quarrelsome and she knows it. A verse like this comes in handy every now and then. Timing is everything. Saying a verse like this at the wrong time and one could become homeless very fast. Fortunately, one of the things I love about my wife is that she lets me be a man and she is a student of Proverbs and knows what verses like these mean to our relationship.

My wife knows I am not perfect and that my heart is right and that I can be courageous when the moment calls for it (she wants a strong husband). In our quarrels, she is testing my resolve, my commitment, and my desire to protect her to rescue her. We have learned to work out our quarrels and achieve peace in the home.

I asked her to go at least another 28 years with me today. We are on an adventure and every now and then we may argue over which path to take, but she usually trusts me to make the right decisions for our family.

"Marriage and Divorce" with Dr. Ed Young

Proverbs 21:9 - "Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife."

Sure beats living in a desert. I pray that quarrel is not commonplace in your home. I don't have an answer for how to workout an equilibrium with a wife who is quarrelsome. I have seen guys beat down by their lady. What are your thoughts about a quarrelsome wife? Or quarrelsome husband?

Miller Time, Proverbs 20

"Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise."

Proverbs 20:1

Beer and wine have been around a very long time. In fact, the making of beer has been credited with the formation of organized agriculture and early civilization. The barley required to make beer served a unique purpose. The English and the Irish and Scotts fought over the English's attempt to tax their beer. The thought was that men were okay with the English taking their land and their women, but they drew the line at their beer (maybe a rewriting of actual history).

Egyptian Jewish slaves were rewarded in beer for their hard work building the pyramids and the United States Marines Corps was founded at "Tun Tavern" in 1775 Philedelphia and many a navy stock their hulls with rum and ale to sail the open seas.

Wine has offered a drink that does not need to be purified, the alcohol preserved well given the scarcity of water. Prisoners find a way to distill their own mash behind bars.

Food and drink serve their purposes. However, many have fallen into "alcoholism" and destroyed their lives. Some people have come dangerously close allowing excessive alchohol to impair their judgment. There was a time, when I was getting drunk every weekend (or so it seemed). "It was Miller time!" although I didn't drink Miller, "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" was the other mantra. Fortunately, wisdom prevailed and God has protected me from myself. I do feel very lucky to survive the era of 3:1 drinks and all night partying.

If you think you have a problem with alcohol, God can cure you of the abuse. I enjoyed what a prominent pastor has said, "God can cure you of alcoholism" he does not believe that "Once an alcoholic, always an alcholic." If you feel you have a problem with alcohol, there is hope.

"This Blood is for You" scenes from "Passion of the Christ" to song by Carman

Proverbs 20:3 - "It is a man's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel."

In the age of instant gratification, political turmoil, and war, people are quick to show their contempt, air their discontent, and are ready to fight. Times are stressful indeed. How do we avoid being like "every" fool? Yes at times, I think we can be fools. We get caught up in a political argument, take offense at the tiniest of slights, and get in moods where everything and everyone seems to tick us off. It's hard to avoid a good fight every now and then. Especially, if someone is just begging for it. It is to our honor to avoid strife.

The Dew, Proverbs 19

"A king's rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like the dew on the grass."

Proverbs 19:12

Morning dew is cool. I remember the "Mountain Dew" soda commercials and having my first swig, expecting something powerful from the taste. It promised the cleanness of the mountains and life in a bottle. I am not a Mountain Dew drinker, but know those who are and they swear by the stuff. As I write this post, I do have a thirst for it now.

Dew is evidence of a new day. "Favor like the dew on grass . . . " sounds like something worth having. It drips on our every being, it nurishes, it soaks our roots, it provides lifegiving abundance, and it can be seen in our lives. It is refreshing.

That is really how God impacts our lives. He provides the dew, the favor, the annointing, the blessing that we seek. Knowing that all is well.

I have heard atheists and darwinists claim that "religion is like knitting." They believe it is harmless and it gives people something to do. They have made science their God and worship at the feet of Darwin by worshiping the "husk" of life and stopping short of acknowledging the life giving force of God who made the science possible - they are spiritually dry.

They really don't know how ignorant their statements are and the discount how dangerous our God is (it's in plain sight, but they refuse to see it). He is fierce like a lion and he rages, but he chooses to show us favor.

"Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot

Proverbs 19:16 - "He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die."

This verse is a matter of fact in its meaning. We have a choice and that is it. Our lives are songs to the Lord. A good song is memorable, it brings good memories and it lingers. A song that destroys, brings turmoil and disaster. It ends quickly and is remembered no more, except as a lesson and a warning to others.

12.18.08 Half-Cocked, Proverbs 18

"A fool finds no pleasure in understanding, but delights in airing his own opinions."

Proverbs 18:2

To be "half-cocked" has several meanings. One meaning may be to not have your wits about you and the other is to have part of the information required to get the job done. In the Marines it meant someone who didn't know what they were doing and is based in the history of not having their weapon ready to fire - "half-cocked" is dangerous in either scenarious.

We may have all of the bravado, best of intentions, but we may not ready to face the enemy. The enemy is that which steals the opportunity or hinders the plan of God. None of us want to be "half-cocked" and in today's spiritual climate we can't afford it. However, we may be just that.

Many believers are realizing that the stakes are very high and they are doing something about it. We are engaged in the spiritual battle for families, our friends in business, our nation, and each other. I have created a prayer list of 30 people I most admire in life, many of them I know and others I don't. I want them to be protected and pray that they hit a bullseye in their efforts and that they remain sensitive to what God is doing in these times.

"What's in your heart?" Pastor Kris Vallotto

Proverbs 18:13 - "He who answers before listening - that is his folly and his shame."

I am working hard at being a better listener. My tendency is to talk. I am a Marketer. A buddy of mine says "Marketers make the world seem so rosey!" He is right, mainly in that Marketers see the world in "possibilities", what can happen if everything works out right and fortunately, the do have a way of working out.

My job as a Marketer, dad, volunteer in the community is to listen. So, I am working on that more. People value listeners and if you and I are really good listeners, we will hear things others don't. Our database of knowledge, wisdom, and contacts is incredible. When we listen, we are able to capatilize more effectively. We avoid being half-cocked and more effective.

12.17.08 The Producer, Proverbs 17

"A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son, and will share in the inheritance as one of the brothers."

Proverbs 17:2

"Ari Gold" Jeremy Piven of "Entourage"

I am a fan of the HBO Series "Entourage". Actor Jeremy Piven plays "Ari Gold" the "make it happen" Hollywood Agent who loves his clients and seems to pull a "rabbit out of hat" in crisis moments. "Ari" is a mensch who plays the game so well, without sacrificing his ethics. He is not beyond "sticking it" to those who deserve it, but he goes to war for his "Entourage" and comes out smelling like a rose. Not appropriate for this blog, you can do a google search on "You Tube" for "Ari Gold" and catch a few of his stunning quips and view of life in the trenches of Hollywood.

Proverbs 17:10 - "A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes to a fool."

Have you been rebuked lately? If the answer is no, then you are doing something wrong. People will tell you, you can't do something if you are doing something. They will blow you off if you are trying to make something big happen. They will ignore your e-mails if you have something to say. They will fail to return your call if you have a great opportunity. Rebukes are subtle. Don't let that stop you.

Wise Heart, Proverbs 16

"A wise man's heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction."

Proverbs 16:23

I don't know if I have a wise heart, but I want one desperately. I want to deal with people justly, to make the right decisions, to have a life that is blessed, and to help those who can't help themselves or who need the right advice and counsel. I like to be counted as trustworthy, gracious, thoughtful, considerate, and reliable. In a world of judgment, we often make decision too quickly and categorize people instantly. I have been guilty of this and have had it done to me. I have found that when I have made judgments about people, I have been wrong. In what sounds like a "Yogism" - "You never get to know people, until you get to know them", I have met some of the greatest contacts through the less likliest people.

It is better to value people, get to know them, and undertsand their needs, concerns, and personal life challenges. Honest interest in people opens doors for you and them.

"Why I do what I do" with Guy Kawasaki

Proverbs 16:19 - "Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud."

Sharing plunder is the act of taking from others what is not rightly deserved. The oppressed suffer the loss, but realize that God is in control and justice will prevail. This happens everyday around the world. The proud may boast in their limited victory, but judgment is just around the corner. Bad things happen to good people and when bad things happen, this makes us realize just how much we need God. When you got nothing, you still have God, and he takes you into a secret place that fortifies. He is our victor. A temporary loss is just that.

An Apt Reply, Proverbs 15

"A man finds joy in giving an apt reply and how good is a timely word."

Proverbs 15:23

An apt reply resonates in our soul. An apt reply is a thoughtful reply that appeals to our greater selves, it inspires, it captures our imagination, it commands our attention. We should give thought to our replies. I have a few thank you letters to send to a few special people. There is so much I want to say to them and my thank you letter sent in the mail will be more valuable than one sent by e-mail. Who can you write today?

Drill Instructor Interview SSGT Curtis Osbourne

Proverbs 15:31 - "He who listens to a life giving rebuke will be at home among the wise."

The Marines taught me to be confident in front of my peers and when speaking to superiors. In the Marines, integrity is what measured trust. Confidence was demonstrated by one's bearing and a Marine could spot nervousness a mile off. That discipline came with much shouting and persecution. The Marine Drill Instructor is a rare breed. For a season, nothing a recruit did was correct.

The drill instructor tore down new recruits until they realized that discipline in purpose and confidence in one's ability was earned. The world of the Marine was a place of honor and respect. We rarely get a life giving rebuke in our daily activities. People are afraid to speak up and let people go on their way making the same mistakes.

I enjoy teaching kids and there are often opportunities to give them life giving rebukes and many will try to challenge authority only to find resistance that they may not have encountered at home.

In my business, I must advise clients, fellow adults. Many times, they may not hear what I am saying to them and I have to be creative in how I get their attention. We need people who speak truth in our lives and I have learned to garner the attention and respect of my clients when a "life giving rebuke" is necessary. I have also been on the receiving end of a "rebuke" from them, but together we work towards a solution that will reward our efforts. We need people who know us really well and are confident in sharing their observations to help us stay on course.

All Talk, Proverbs 14

"All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."

Proverbs 14:23

"It's time for action!"

The director shouts "Cameras rolling . . . lights . . . sound check . . . quiet on the set . . . mark it . . . and action!" If you have never been on a movie set, it is an incredible experience. Prior to the movie being made, much of it is talk. The writers prepare for the story, colloborating on the screen play, pitching the film and recruiting the team, raising the money, selecting the site locations, negotiating use of equipment and locations, casting the film, and then comes production day. Time to go to work. In the movie world, talk is work.

Many people talk a good game, but when it comes time to doing work they are absent. This verse focuses on those who are all talk. They really don't come through on their talk. They "say" they will do things, but they don't or they talk so much, they rob themselves of opportunities. "Self talk" is meant to motivate one to do work more effeciently and effectively or to improve one's life.

Workers are always looking for more work. A respected business man I know says "I am not a show horse, I am a work horse. I have a world class work ethic." I believe the man, he works 7 days a week. He gets his rest within his work schedule. He lives to work and serve his customers. He has also built a fortune in the process.

"Work" with Pastor Mike Fabarez

Proverbs 14:24 - "The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly."

I have many wealthy clients and friends and have a strong appreciation for successful business people. Many have gone through overwhelming odds to gain their status. Some have been homeless, othere saved from that shame by the help of friend, others have been humbled and given a second chance, and others have had their support withdrawn only to fend for themselves (which became part of the lesson).

In our culture it is easy to count the "dreamer" a "fool". A dreamer who "does" is someone who believes he can attain a crown. A "fool" is one who does not really want to work or attain his crown, he is only living for today. We have a culture of fools in this era. People who are not planning for the future, those who are not willing to sacrifice today for tomorrow, and those who are not learning (their brains are on autopilot). One of the first lessons in business is to do what you love. In fact, it becomes all you can think about. When it becomes your passion, then you are on your journey to wealth - if you work and plan for it!

Misfortune, Proverbs 13

"Misfortune pursues the sinner, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous."

Proverbs 13:21

"Misfortune Cookie"

With the economy in criss, many are being humbled right about now. Layoffs, stock portfolio crashes, political turmoil, crazy weather and natural disasters, and institutional collapses seem to be the news of the day. In fact, you may feel like you are a target. Well you just might be.

The enemy has his sights on you and you are wide open. Ever felt that way? I have. Fortunately, I have the ultimate "OnStar" device, "GPS" locator, and "Blackberry" that reaches around the world and across the unknown universe. This resource gets my "Twitter" updates in nano-seconds. In fact, he already knows my plight before I do. He is my force field!

So, when you may be feeling like you aren't that important. It may be passed time to call on the almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth. The journey may be a little tough and you may have to do a little "relationship building", but he already knows your situation and knows what it is going to take to get you on the righteous path. It requires a little humility, but hey you aren't the only one being humbled in these times.

"Humility Linebacker"

Proverbs 13:14 - "The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death."

I need more wise advisors. I value the key relationships I have garnered over the years. I am building my network of trusted friends in business and in life that I can just let it all hang out. They inspire me and I hope I inspire them. Reached out to a guy to wish him a happy birthday and he replied that he was "glad to be alive." I could have missed something here.

I shared a story about my cousin Richard Valadez (43) who had just received a much waited heart transplant. This guy replied that he had just had 3 heart attacks himself and was bouncing back remarkably. Well, I have been fortunate to have caring family who have insisted on me having check ups and thankfully my docs have done a great job advising me on my family history and preventative measures. God is good and he will keep us from harm if we will just be sensitive to the clues that abound. I am very thankful that my buddy and my cousin have a new lease on life. God is gracious to extend our lives.

12.12.08 The Counsel, Proverbs 12

"Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge; but he who hates correction is stupid."

Proverbs 12:1

"Thirst for Knowledge" Portrait Unknown Artist

Discipline is hard. At first, it shocks, it may hurt, it may humble - then revelation. It is an amazing thing to be transitioned from mediocrity to elevated awareness and ultimately status. Our walk with the Lord is a series of discipline and he only disciplines the ones he loves; so, if you are getting a "life whipping", take heart things are changing for the better for you.

I cracked the oil pan to my 1985 BMW this week. This was the 3rd time in 3 years. I was devastated. The repair on a BMW oil pan costs $1150. This time I was lucky and didn't break any engine mounts (which would have added to the cost).

My Ultimate Driving Machine rides low to the ground (performance suspension, nice and tight) and the streets in Houston are wavy and bumpy. It was my own fault for driving a little too quickly while crossing the railroad tracks. I was rushing a client to a live a radio show after their appearance on a live TV show (we were in a hurry). I have learned to handle adversity with grace, the client never knew about my own situation (although I was doing all I could to contain myself). We made it to the station on time and I had enough engine power to get to the parking lot without an overheating problem or the engine locking up (the silver lining).

I could have done without this problem, but in the problem, I found opportunity. It drew me closer to God and I could hear him better. I think the situation gave me more power over the enemy. A derailed setback, actually became fodder to push forward, realization that God was still in control. I had messed up, but the facts didn't matter, God was moving me forward.

A buddy gave me a ride to an important meeting that I would have missed. It taught my wife and I once again, that we could bounce back from adversity and enter a new realm of faith (we now have a solution to the oil pan problem and our mechanic has suggested a buffer plate be installed).

"One Way Jesus" by United

Proverbs 12:3 - "A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly."

I am a blabber. I am working hard to control my tongue. I am zealous and excited about what I see God doing and he has given me access to some incredible opportunties that require that I share them with many to gain the momentum that needs to happen on most of them. However, given the dynamics of my world, there is opportunity to share information that may actually "short circuit" an opportunity. Self-interested people could actually steal the idea or alert someone prematurely and have them withdraw their support, etc. In my world, timing and trust is everything.

So, knowing what to say and what not to say is a delicate balance. Fortunately, trusted partners makes it easier to share information with each other. Our tendency is to blurt out what we know, when we may need to hold back for the right moment. A little information here, a little there, and before you know it, you have got the attention of the people you want and then an idea can flourish and bless many people.

12.11.08 Dishonesty, Proverbs 11

"The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight."

Proverbs 11:1

"Calibrated Weight Kit" for measuring

Are you a fanatic about the details? Accountants, engineers, and lawyers probably are, but Marketers are another story. However, that isn't to say that a Marketer doesn't make the details possible. Dreamers are the ones who make things happen, there are no accountants, engineers, or lawyers without the dreamer and doer. When it comes to the details, the Lord is fanatical about honesty. If he is fanatical about accuracy, shouldn't we?

"Honesty, Pass It On!"

Proverbs 11:23 - "The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath."

Are you good or wicked? We have a tendency to judge ourselves by our own standards. It is easy to get comfortable with our own perceived goodness. Yet, there are many people in prison who are guilty, but claim they did no wrong - even murderers, child molesters, and thieves. The biggest challenge is to peel back the "onion of our own lives" and see ourselves as God sees us. We aren't as righteous as we might think.

Thankfully, we do have grace with God and opportunity to clean the slate and step up into the righteousness he has prepared for us that comes from wisdom and discipline. It is like God gives us a shocking revelation of our nature, enough that we don't hate ourselves, but we dislike it enough to make changes. If you have never had this experience, then you may be a little "self-righteous" ask God to show you.

Sadly, there are many righteous "posers". I believe we should check our spirt daily. Oh I know, I still have a lot of work. However, there are those special moments, when I sense God's approval, even though I may not have the approval of men. In the long-run, integrity and a resolve to do right wins the day. I love this verse. God is good, we should be too.

12.10.08 The Diligent, Proverbs 10

"Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth."

Proverbs 10:4

Are your hands diligent? If you own or manage a company, are the hands of your team diligent? How wise to create robotic hands that are always diligent based on the needs of the programmer and the application. Efficiency is critical in these times. However, many have gotten complacent. We fail to be diligent. We give up on our dream, our future, and we fail to enter the wealth and opportunity that God has provided.

"Never Give Up!" Rudy Ruettiger, WELL DONE AWARDS

Proverbs 10:21 - "The lips of the righteous nourish many; but fools die for lack of judgment."

Your lips can be diligent if you have something to say or offer others. Are you a reader? Do you like to communicate ideas with others? You intellectual capital has value. What do you know? Who do you know? How can you influence others and create value in these times? Before we speak, we need to evaluate the opportunties. Judgment is critical.

12.9.08 The Meal, Proverbs 9

"She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table."

Proverbs 9:3

Do you hunger and thirst for the things of God? These are trying times. It is so easy to get distracted with our own personal problems, but there are always many worse than us. God wants to reach those people and he is looking for givers. Those who give their time, their talent, and their resources. The needs are many. He has prepared a feast for us. Food that blesses our spirit beyond compare. That used to be hard to comprehend, but when God is preparing you for greater things, then you hunger for the things that provide lasting nourshment and make you feel more alive than you ever have.

"The Hunger"

Proverbs 9:17 - "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious."

Do you hunger for righteousness? Instead, do we hunger for the things of the world and satisfy our desires with substitutes? Are we "short circuiting" God's plan?

We may not steal water, but we may steal opportunities from others. We may consume off of the talent and influence of others. Have you ever been taken advantage of? Has someone stolen your time, an idea, or failed to pay you for a service rendered? I enjoy working with gracious people. People who value my time and people who know that I value them as well - that requires trust.

I love working with people who want to do the right thing. Unfortunately, the view of "right" looks different from the perspective of the other. How do we keep from stealing from each other and how do we add value to other? Be a giver, it always comes back.

The Passion, Proverbs 8

"Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right."

Proverbs 8:6

Our hearts are naturally hard. Are you sentimental? Do you cry easily? My young daughters break my heart. They can cry at the drop of a hat. When the water works start, daddy has to bring on the compassion and understanding. I have to deny myself and meet them where they are, until all is well. I relish in their sensitivity and wish I was as tender when it comes to people, the needs of the Kingdom, and my service to the Church.

Are you passionate about the things of God? I enjoy the moments when I feel like my motives are pure, that God is leading me to the next blessing, and my heart is yearning for his instruction. I just want to drop what I am doing, lift my hands in prayer, and soak in what he is speaking to my soul.

When those moments happen, I can't wait to execute the word he has given me, to act on that small whisper, before I lose touch, forget, or lose my nerve. My pastor says we were "made to worship." We will worship something or somebody. Worship is the passion of life. When our passion is focused on the things of God, we enter the miracle zone. How do you know when God is speaking to you?

"Amazing Grace" from the movie "Amazing Grace"

Proverbs 8:35 - "Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway."

What are you waiting for? What is worth the wait? What are you listenting too? Who are you listening too? Our relationship with wisdom is delicate. We must bear in, seek out her voice, and seek her out. We have many decisions to make on this Earth. We make many without giving thought as to the impact on the Kingdom, our families, and our lives. Fortunately, we have "grace" that covers our mistakes. This grace spurs us on to do greater things and to give grace to others. We are living in a time of forgiveness, we have to forgive and move on. Connect with those moving in the faith and push forward.

12.6.08 Survive, Proverbs 6

"Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler."

Proverbs 6:5

Have you ever trapped yourself with your words? My daughters know my "yes" means "yes" and my "no" means "no." They have taken my "maybe" to mean "yes." If I tell my children "yes" they will hold me to it, no matter how much I would want to "try" to change their minds.

Similarly, in business or in life. The more one increases in influence, power, and responsibility, the stakes increase. Even in harmonious living in your neighborhood, one must be careful what they commit.

Life is challenging! To avoid traps, this Proverbs verse helps us to realize that when we have trapped ourselves or placed our future in danger, we need to work it out.

"The Way of the Master" - Adultery with Kirk Cameron

Proverbs 6:32 - "But a man who commits adultery lacks judgement; whoever does so destroys himself."

Now, I love beautiful women, God does amazing work. However, lusting after them is another matter. As a happily married man, I have had to learn to not be a "lustful admirer" of women and that has kept me out of trouble.

Now, that isn't to say that I am "dirt free". The Lord helps us to get out of the pit of a sinful life. That is a daily renewal and dedication. We want to keep that slate clean.

I do know friends who have admitted their addiction to pornography and they work hard to battle that addiction. Anyone can give into their lust, that is the easy thing. The harder thing is to develop defense mechanisms that protect our lives. That comes brick by brick. To preserve our families, we have to build up our protective barriers. We see the headlines and media coverage of adulterous disasters. We don't want to be a statistic. Pray for protection, wisdom, and discipline in purpose. The stakes are too high!

The Hooker, Proverbs 7

"She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said . . ."

Proverbs 7:13

Major General Joseph Hooker (Civil War era)

What did she say? Are you hooked? The origins of the name "Hooker" given to prostitutes is said to have originated in New York city prior to the civil war and possibly reinforced when General Hooker allowed his men to gallavant with the ladies of the evening. He allowed them to set up shop within the confines of the base and follow the boys on their way to war, collecting their military pay along the way.

Proverbs 7 warns young virile men to avoid these ladies on the prowl. The poor guy in this story never saw it coming. His curiosity got the best of him and he was no more.

"The Stethoscope" by Southern Hill Church of Christe Abilene Texas

Proverbs 7:24 - "Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways."

Are we tuning into the "God Channel"? Do we need a stethoscope or a some other device? What does the sound of our heart make? A burlesque show? A thief chase? A murder mystery? A family fued? An ever expanding adventure and glorious journey in search of the things of God like an "Indiana Jones" flick? What is the sound of your heart?

All Tied Up, Proverbs 5

"The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast."

Proverbs 5:22

Do you feel all tied up? Things just not going your way? I know I sometimes feel that way, but then something miraculous happens. The Lord sets me loose and I run. Sin can bind us up forever if we don't confess it or repent. I am strong believer in "Pray Until Something Happens" - P.U.S.H.

We are engaged in a battle on this earth. The battle takes many forms for men. We work hard, come home, zone out and live by remote control. We have been sidelined. Others get caught up in extra-marital affairs and they are side-lined. Many get involved in drugs and they are sidelined. When you become active in the Kingdom, then you become dangerous and a target to be sidelined. By grace we are set free and we need prayer more than ever to keep us free from the ties that bind. "Do you have what it takes?"

"Do I Have What It Takes?" a discussion with John Eldredge "Wild at Heart"

Proverbs 5:20 - "Why be captivated my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife."

Dangerous territory indeed. Just finished reading "Every Man's Battle" by Stephen Arteburn. In it cites the verse that has kept him from sin "I have made a covenant with my eyes" spoken by Job. When danger lurks, he has learned to "bounce" his eyes away from what has captured his eye. This training has enabled him to protect his marriage and keep his love for his wife vibrant.

12.4.08 A Father's Wisdom, Proverbs 4

"Listen my sons, to a father's instruction . . ."

Proverbs 4:1

"Father Know's Best" (from the 50's TV Series)

I have been reading "Who's Your Daddy Now?" by Doug Stringer. In the book, he talks about the "fatherless generation", those we call "Generation X and Y" or the "millenials." This generation needs the wisdom and council of a father. Doug writes the next wave of blessing will come from this generation. He cites the story of Rebecca who watered the camels of Abraham in Genesis 24 of the old testatment bible. In story she notices that the camels need water and she provided 400 gallons of water to 40 camels (a thirsty camel can drink 10 gallons of water).

All of the camels bore a dowry that was to be given to the bride of Isaac, Abraham's son. Rebecca didn't know that she was preparing a blessing for herself. She wanted to serve, she did the dirty work, she kept on it until the work was done, and she never complained. She knew her purpose. It wasn't glamorous until God stepped in and elevated her through her dedication.

Doug believes that God can use the fatherless generation to usher in the Second Coming, with the help of the church and those who are ministering to this generation.

"God Help Me" by Rebecca Saint-James

Proverbs 4:6 - "Do not foresake wisdom, and she will protect you; lover her, and she will watch over you."

In my business, there are so many opportunities to be misunderstood, categorized, or ignored. If you are in sales, then you know what that means. I am in Marketing, so it is much worse.

Lately, I have found many doors opening and I have to remember to really pray. I am excited by what God is doing, but sometimes the download can lose people. So, I am relying on the protection of wisdom to keep things in balance. There is so much at stake in these times and the value of relationships is so critical. A misunderstanding pushes timelines and objectives behind.

Lately, I have been getting a lot of laughs with my ruberic "In this business, you really have to forgive a lot of people." This comment seems to resonate, because in life we have to forgive a lot of people and work with them, even if they are a "stinky camel." There is so much work to do, keep serving. The camels don't care about you, they just want satisify their hunger or thirst. God wants to give you what is on their backs.

The Waiting, Proverbs 3

"Let love and faithfulness never leave you; . . ."

Proverbs 3:3

"Waiting for Pigs to Fly?"

We often equate faithfulness with marriage. We may often wait on our spouse to "get it", to "understand us", and we may get frustrated when we think they aren't being faithful to the marriage (in a variety of forms). Each spouse can be guilty of this. Unfortunately, the waiting becomes a wall and the marriage can suffer for it. A healthy marriage consistently works on breaking down those walls - it is a give and take. "I give, she takes!" Just kidding.

To be faithful applies to so many areas of our life. It requires patience, discernment, dedication, forgiveness, and renewal.

In business, one finds many with self-interests, the reason many consult lawyers and sign contracts; yet, misunderstandings do ocurr. A partnership in business requires trust and verification no matter how many documents are signed. Finally, faithful employees may not be rewarded for their lifelong commitment. Sadly, many in life have become negative, we become sarcatistic and our demeanor less hopeful. We lack understanding.

As Christians we may be waiting on the Lord for a much needed answer and waiting is difficult. However, we are called to be faithful. I don't like waiting either, but often we find that the waiting is part of the discovery.

"A Man Fell into a Hole" BlueFishTv.com

Proverbs 3:13 - "Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold."

Where does one find wisdom and understanding? What are some of the ways you feed your mind and your soul? Is what you are learning adding value to your life and the lives of others or is it taking away value? How do you determine value? Is that valuation model correct?

The Struggle of Righteousness, Proverbs 2

"For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; . . ."

Proverbs 2:22

"Soul Struggle" by Frank Picini

To be righteous is to be set free from the pull of unrighteousness. The struggle is the daily battle to win this tug of unholiness on our lives. Fortunately, that battle has been won by Jesus Christ and as Christians we go through our own sanctification process. We enter into divine protection and guidance under the holy spirit. It is easy to claim to be righteous, but to live it out is more difficult.

As I study Proverbs, I am confronted with my past and my current life situation. I realize what a fool I have been. There is a struggle to dig in deeper with God and to seek his discipline, training, and to continue on the journey of discovery. I remember my 2 year training stint in karate. Each day of training was a commitment, the sessions were often very physically challenging and the discipline focus was demanded. However, each belt award was a reward for that patience and also a recognition of wisdom and knowledge attained. How much so in the gradation of the kingdom of God and our spiritual journey? What color belt are you? I am probably still at white belt (a beginner).

My heart's desire is to sever that which binds me to the past, to be set free from the things that have restricted my effectiveness for the kingdom. The lessons I failed to learn then, I hope to correct in the future.

"Be Strong and Courageous" with Todd Phillip (BlueFishTV)

Proverbs 2:6 -"For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

Our struggles are not fruitless. The Lord is preparing us for greater things and bigger battles. We must do our part to be ready. There are many examples that we can learn from in business, in war, and in life. It is amazing to me how happenstances guide our curiousity. One thing leads us to a new discovery and a prompting to a new exploration. We must ask God for wisdom daily, beg him, and hang on to him. He will reveal it. Stay close to him and endure the struggle to become righteous.

Everything We Need, Proverbs 1

" . . . for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life; . . "

Proverbs 1:3

We are so blessed in America. We have so many blessings we can't count them all. In fact, we may have too much (too much is when your stuff gets in the way of your relationship with God). I remember the Steve Martin movie "The Jerk" when he goes into his tirade, "All I need . . ." (click here to see the clip).

Make a quick list of the things you can't do without? In economic turmoil, we may be looking for ways to cut back. What if you had nothing? Would your attitude about God change?

Part 1: "I have all I need" Nick Vujicic

Part 2: "I have all I need" Nick Vujicic

Proverbs 1:33 - ". . . but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease without fear of harm."

The #1 fear in the world, bar none is "Interpersonal Aggression" says Colonel Grossman, author of the book "On Combat". Colonel Grossman is the foremost authority on combat and trains the military special forces and elite police forces on how to prepare for this fear and to deal with it psychologically. The fear never goes away, but these professionals learn to recognize it and handle the symptoms as they arise.

This fear is bread in our genetic code from ages of human conflict. We have become adept in a modern society at sizing up a situation quickly when we park, step into a public place, and analyze oncomers (friend or foe analysis). Our defenses are automatic anticipating the "fight or flight" response should the need arise. What is your worst nightmare? Does it haunt you now? What helps you to overcome? The word of God promises a sound mind and encourages us to be as "wise as serpents and as innocent as doves."

11.30.08 The Trespass, Proverbs 30

"Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar."

Proverbs 30:6

Depending on how familiar you are with the bible, there are many misquotes or misintepretations to be found. If you are familiar with it you will spot these instances of abuse or misapplication.

We are cautioned against misusing scriptures. Scholars of the bible do find revelation in the scriptures and offer insights provided by the era and its history. Many novices claim that one can make the bible support anything and thus it is unreliable and that is their justification for not reading it. That thought process has become an old cliche.

Yes, there have been cults that have arisen out of a mis-applied bible by its teacher; thus, the preface of the Proverbs 30:6.

The bible is called the "Sword" in Christian circles. Swords have a long history in civilization, requiring training to offer protection and offensive confrontation of enemies (not a bad thing and a Godly calling). Similarly, one should train and study the bible to discover its true usefulness to one's life. Its rich history and relevance continues to make it applicable today. You don't have to be a bible scholar to read the bible. On your journey, you will learn many scriptures and how to apply them in your life.

"Sword of the Spirit"

Proverbs 30:5- "Every word of God is flawless, he is a shield to those who take refuge in him."

Have you ever read the bible and discovered a verse that seems to have been written just for you or stood out in a way that you know it applies to your life right then and there? I have. I have read the bible cover to cover; although I must admit that it took me about 2 years to do so. I have have read many sections of the good book many times over. Now, my reading is like a meandering journey to rediscover meanings. There is history, art, prophetic glimpses, modern application, and wisdom. As part of our life's journey should include bible reading in order to stay relevant and fresh and inspired to live life.
